Meme

"Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it."

Words Meme 2

From mr_six:

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you.

Grin.

Yes, I do. Lots. Because life's funny and tragic and if you can't laugh and roll with it you get rolled over. 'Sides, people (mostly) grin back!

Scot.

I've lived almost all my life in Scotland and must have drunk a little too much of the water - I've absorbed the accent, the sense of humour and the inability to deal with hot weather (although not the Scottish propensity for freckling and/or burning in the sun).

Family.

I have a large family, and an even larger extended family. We don't always all get on, but my family do occupy a big chunk of my life. I do find social situations slightly awkward sometimes, so to make life easier I also tend to treat people I meet as if they're extended members of my family. Works for me...

Insomnia.

Thank God, I haven't suffered from this for a while now. In fact, now I have the opposite problem - if I don't sleep well more than a couple of nights in a row, I'm very tired and almost useless the next day.

Brains

Mmmmmm.... Brains....
I'm often described as intelligent. However, outside of a God-given nack for passing exams, I've never really been sure what this means. I remember details long after they stop being relevant and I can connect up patterns between with these details, sometimes arriving at unusual conclusions; does this count as intelligence?
Words Meme...

From the <s>gentleman and</s> scholar who is bodybag_pilgrim:

Books

A weakness we share :)
Books are my solace and my sanctuary, my companions and my retreat. When I'm happy I read, when I'm lonely I read. I grew up in and around libraries, and I've never been precious about actually owning books, so my bookshelf grows and ebbs over the months and years. But there are always more books out there to read, and I am never so excited as when walking into a new bookshop or library - the possibilities are endless.

Cyberenhancements

Not sure about this one, or how it relates to me. I have a bluetooth earset which is rarely very far from me, but that's probably about it. Not to say that if someone offered me an upgrade on my ears or eyes I wouldn't be tempted!

Perfumes

While my hearing and sight are as good as they need to be, my nose is the only sense that works a little better than average. As such, I thoroughly enjoy new combinations of scents, and find that they often speak to my emotional state in much the same way as music can - mirroring my mood or prompting a new one. My perfume collection currently holds more precious scented oils than I may be able to use in my life, but it doesn't stop me testing and acquiring new ones on a regular basis - there's always something new to smell!

Humour

I'm not sure that everyone would agree with this as one of my defining characteristics... My sense of humour & playfulness plays best within the classic two-man setup of many a comedy duo. It's not often I find someone I can bounce off sufficiently to keep the ball in play in a game that incorporates both improvisation and one-upmanship, but I am honoured to share that dynamic with bodybag_pilgrim.

Multitasking

Do I? I would have said that I have my share of multi-tasking habits (watch TV & iron, drive & talk on phone handsfree, travel & sleep, rock a baby & talk, etc.) but that I find it difficult to change gears; mental gears in switching to a new task, and (unfortunately) physical gears when driving. Multi-tasking and task-switching might not be the same thing but they're tied together enough that I now perform most tasks sequentially and not together...

I've belatedly picked this meme up from the Lancaster crewe - it's a lot more fun that it appears....

Meme:

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you.

I'll be putting up a post explaining the words wot has been given to me later today.

Pay It Forward

I will send a handmade gift to the first 5 people who leave a comment here on my website.

I don’t yet know what that gift will be - it could be anything: cloth, metal, paper, wood, a song, anything goes - but you will receive it within 365 days. Bear in mind I am significantly less talented than many of my friends so this will be something I can make and to my ability. Hopefully it will be something you like, but I make no promises.

The only thing you have to do in return is "pay it forward" by making a similar agreement on your blog.

Dark Delicacies (Retail Exclusive)
Black Phoenix's Dark Delicacies blend is the embodiment of sinister sensuality.
Lycaon (Lunacy Companion, December 2006)
A monstrous, brutal, and bloodthirsty blend: blackened myrrh, crushed olive leaf, black musk, spikenard, frankincense, cypress wood, opoponax, white ginger, and patchouli. ~Reviews~
£9

Midnight Kiss (Shojo Beat, 2007)

Privilege (Bastille Day, 2007)
Polished party-girl sleaze. This is a shameless scent, devoid of caution, regret, or introspection. This perfume reeks of tabloid glamour, and has no substance whatsoever. Armoise, tuberose, white citrus, rose absolute, oakmoss, tiare, tuberose, vanilla, linden, and lemon tree blossom.

Although this scent originated with fine plants and the pure essences, the final result is a grotesque, eerily empty caricature of a debauched, narcissistic would-be debutante. ~Reviews~
£9

Samhain 2005 (Halloween, 2005)
Truly the scent of autumn itself -- damp woods, fir needle, and black patchouli with the gentlest touches of warm pumpkin, clove, nutmeg, allspice, sweet red apple and mullein. ~Reviews~
1 imp left in bottle, £3

Stinky (Summer, 2009)
A cure for sweaty bits and sticky wilting. Stinky is a summer refresher 'foom for people that don't dig run-of-the-mill "clean" scents: newly-washed skin with a dusting of milk, white honey, and baby powder. ~Reviews~
Full, £9

Tanuki (Lunacy Companion, November 2007)
A scent of hedonistic, uninhibited joy: bamboo reed, plum blossom, persimmon, magnolia, black pine, sweet osmanthus, flowering cherry, mandarin orange, wisteria, and yuzu. ~Reviews~
£9

Rosewood with Sicilian lemon peel, red Mysore sandalwood, pale musks, sweet mountain sage and a dusting of lily, night-blooming jasmine and orris.

Bayou
A lazy, warm deep green scent with a thick aquatic undertone: Spanish moss, evergreen and cypress with watery blue-green notes and an eddy of hothouse flowers and swamp blooms.

Centzon Totochtin (label stuck down)
Also called Gallows Literature. A dime novel rife with melodrama, horror, madness and cruelty; a ten cent analogy of vice and virtue in conflict. Soft perfume evocative of noir heroines over rich red grave loam.

Adamus - Dry and sweet new mown hay is combined with tobacco flower and my own concoction of sweet green moss.

Baby (pre-reformulation!) - light musk, sugar, lavender, pink rosebud, chamomile

Ego - Harmony and proper balance, spiked with chocolate fun

Frou-Frou - gentle floral

Guffaw - The third in the trio of Giddy, Glee, and Guffaw. This chocolate blast is more of a perfume and less of a candy scent, but the chocolate is very evident and is so much more of a player than ever before. It's a real grown up chocolate scent which can actually get away with adult humor. Milk chocolate is center of attention this time along with a special dark honey background and a big dollop of spice (old fashioned pretty spice). Very beautiful, very playful...Audrey Hepburn would have loved it.

Hawai'i - Serious Flowers - rich frangiapani, white ginger, pikaki, incense

Midnight Mass at Old St Mary's - A resinous incense blend, redolent with polished wood of the pews, the beeswax candles, and offertory fruits.

Missouri x2 - The Kiss Me You Fool State - cooling lemon, ambery background, very light non cloying musk, blue lily, with a background of slight magnolia, and sweet gum resins

Mrs. Rabbit's Carrot Cake - Most moist and vanilla drenched melting cake shot through with sugar encrusted rum kissed currents and golden raisins (which crunch in your mouth) and crowned with the richest butterfilled sour cream and ricotta frosting and trimmed with tiny spun sugar carrots, grass, and...

Ohio - Sticky Gooey Buckeyes</b> - several delectable chocolates play serious footsie with nuts and gooey delights

Orion - Very masculinely charming, outdoors in a very sophisticated way, a hard outside with a very warm heart. This one features Oude, rare and unexpected woods and smoked vanilla.

Over-The-Rhine - Possets' first all out oriental spicy mix

Puce - Slight spice and a hint of raspberry cozy up to a distant and ditsy pressed floral whiff.

Queen of the Night x3 - A deeply perfumy blend with a deeply foody core. It is dry and then again there is a dry sweetness to it.

Scented Gloves - herbaceous floral, a floral herbal with thoroughly modern overlays

Silver Bells x2 - Lily of the Valley; Possets' version of muget de bois. Very creative, non cloying but recognizable, this spring fragrance combines the charm of lily of the valley with uplifting citrus, excptionally fresh green (not the expected and overdone variety), along with a non ozone ozone. Very beautiful, innocent, youthful but with an edge of good fun. Not stuffy, dewy.

Silver Carnations

Silver Lily

The Scent of Angels - Is it vanilla, is it floral, is it musk? Is it all of those things or is the combination more than the sum of its parts?

The Tisane of the Witch - A variety of teas from the darkest black to quite white with the pastries, cream, herbs, sugar, and butter necessary for a proper tea display.

Vermont - Sweet New England -...sweet and very smooth but not cloying. Slightly herbal, shot of lime, with a thick overlay of part of the smell of maple syrup.

Vernal Sun - Lemon and lightest vanilla like the rays of the welcome spring sunshine. A tiny amount of white musk to make it last for a while, a very very light whiff of the fruits to come in the summer, just to give it a solar tang. A pinch of borage, and drop of carrot but mostly blessed lemon and smooth sweetness.

Zubenelgenubi (100% Natural Blend) - an uplifting citrus, grounded by darker elements.

I have yet to try any, but have several on order (Mr Ibis, Mama-Ji, Mr Jacquel, Mr Nancy, Spider). And maybe I'll send them southwards for sniffies ;)

In the meantime, there's a review board for the scents over here.

Robin'

So... is ANYONE still watching Robin Hood? I made it 'til episode 3 or 4 or somehting before deciding that waiting for it to get better was a fool's game and I'd rather do something else on a cold Saturday night in...

I did catch a little bit of last night's episode though. If we ignore the actors (why does every arab seem to have come from the indian subcontinent?!), the dialogue, the costume department (army fatigues in Sherwood?!), the plot, the heavy-handed analogies to the War on Terror, and just about everything else, then we can go :ooooh!: at the fights with two-sworded twirling...

I'm not sure if it's a big deal, spike369, but we had a few corpses lying around by the end of the above fight. There were 4 women warriors despatched by a chap who had probably fought in 'Nam rather than the Crusades. Or does it only count if Robin does the killing..?

While looking for a picture to illustrate this post, I came across this gem:

"The BBC want Matt Lucas to play the role of Friar Tuck in the next series of Robin Hood."

They seriously want to make a second series?!

And counting!

Here's a short virtual tour for anyone who is interested:

http://www.channel4.com/culture/microsites/H/hajj/

This afternoon, I have the first tangible preparation: I'm going to my GP's practice to get shot with innoculations against hepatitis, meningitis and typhoid. And I can decide when I get there whether I want tetanus too, just for fun (ouch!) ;)

Only concern? I had the flu this weekend; if the nurse finds out, she'll send me away injection-less and I might not make the deadline. Although I need to have it at least three weeks before I go, and there's still five, so insha'allah (God willing) it's not going to be a big deal...
